In The Wrong Movie: Satan’s Fiction – Guest Editor Michael Heart of London ICC

We all love to go to see a great movie. Because in a movie you escape reality for about two hours and you can feel free.

Last night I studied out movie titles and how they relate to our lives. You will be amazed how many movie titles can be applied to a modern day disciple of Jesus Christ. I will give you a few examples:

If you are walking without God often your life can be entitled

“Dark Knight” (2008)

If you fall back into sin as a disciple your live could be entitled

“The Dark Knight Rises [Again]” (2012)

Hopefully this is not the case for us.

If you are going through hardships and tribulations your life would be entitled after the movie

“Rocky” (1976)

This is one of my favorites. If you haven’t been in bible studies with people in a long time and you are not sharing your faith your life would be entitled

“The Silence of the Lambs” (1991)

If you considering going back to your old life as a non-christian the movie is called

“Rear Window” (1954)

If you are in the race and share your faith boldly, you are in bible studies with people often, your life would be entitled

“Saving Private Ryan” (1998)

If you feel good about yourself and you are self-righteous you will be named after the movie

“Good Fellas” (1990)

If you are in a dating relationship or you like a sister but you are not sure because you are confused about your feelings, you are

“Doctor Strangelove” (1964)

If you are fallen away you are

“The Departed” (2006)

If you love gossip your life will be according to the movie

“The Lives of Others” (2006)

If you have no zeal, no passion for God you would be named

“Oldboy” (2003)

And finally, if you are looking for God your life can be entitled

“Monthy Python and the Holy Grail” (1975)

In 1994 a movie came out by the name of “Pulp Fiction”. I saw it. It is an extremely violent movie. And that’s why I won’t see it again. But I entitled my lesson somewhat similar to “Pulp Fiction”:

“Satan’s Fiction”

John 10:9-10:

I am the gate; whoever enters through me will be saved. They will come in and go out, and find pasture. The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.

Isn’t this what every person is looking for – life to the full!?!
Isn’t this what you want? Isn’t it what I want? Isn’t this what every single person in the world wants without an exception?

His plan is for you and me to have a life to the full. Satan comes in and tries to steal that life…to the full.

I remember one of my religion teachers in high school. He used to say that Satan is God’s ape. He strives to imitate God but with a twist. And he will do the same with our lives. He will promise i.e. to the zealous a life to the full which appears really attractive but with him it only leads to destruction.
One of Satan’s favourite ways to enter this world and to destroy our lives is through sexual impurity.
Applying a film title to that point I would choose

La Grand Illusion - the 1937 motion picture starring Jean Gabin

La Grand Illusion – the 1937 motion picture starring Jean Gabin

“La Grand Illusion” (1937)

There is a lot of misconception and confusion out there about sex and sexuality and how we need to go about it. And the truth is, this confusion goes into the church with the snip of a finger. And we don’t even know it.

Two weeks ago I talked to Michael Williamson and told him: “Bro, I really want to preach about it”. What brought me to the point that I wanted to preach was the amount of brothers I have spoken to who confessed impurity.

God is so awesome, God always comes through. He has always come through in my life. Not always they way I wanted it but always the way it needed to. I remember when I was a young disciple at the age of 20 something and all the hormones flying around while all my friends were non-christians and sleeping with their girl-friends. But I needed to be righteous. I thought, oh how can I do that? The temptations at times were indescribably strong: “Wow, this girl over there is really attractive and she seems to like me…” But God protected me. I stayed righteous and faithful and God put in my life the most awesome woman I could imagine. I didn’t know how awesome she was when I married her. I knew she was awesome. But I didn’t know all the degrees of awesomeness that she had in her.

I was thinking about my friends from college who were sleeping around, who did whatever their heart told them to do. I thought, where would I be at today? I’m so grateful that God protected me from the temptations and my natural inclinations. Because if God had not protected me I would not have this marriage. It would not be here. I remember as a young disciple on vacation on Curacao having a talk with my dad. He was not very happy that I had become a disciple of Jesus. At this particular talk we were driving in the car and my dad asked me: “You in church, do you believe in not having sex before marriage?” And I said: “Yes.” And he got upset. He said: “How can that be, before you buy a car you need to check out the car you need to test drive it! You know, people get divorced because they are physically not compatible because they don’t know each other.”
I was listening to my dad and at the end I said: “You know what, this is the issue! There is no discipline before, there is no discipline after.” And my dad kept silent for the rest of the ride. But I felt awesome because this was the first time in all the discussions with my father about the church that my father was silent…and humble.

Michael Hart on Internet pornography

Michael Hart

But Satan can deceive us even as disciples. First I want to address the men.
Let’s talk about pornography. Let’s be open about it. Before I became a Christian in a biblical way, pornography was a big part of my life. There was no internet yet. So there were the magazines and the movies that had to be rented.

In the past days I have done a research on the pornography industry. I read articles by people formerly involved in the industry. And I read the statistics. Here are the facts. And if you are tempted to look at pornographic sites keep these facts in mind. They will help you to have strong convictions:

The pornography industry is plastered with drugs and alcohol. A high number of women and men are on drugs or drunk while they are making these movies because they have to numb the pain. They cannot do it when they are sober since the pain is unbearable.

A hundred per cent of the actors have a sexual related disease. So when you are watching pornographic video clips and if you are lusting after the woman in there you keep in mind:

She is high, she is drunk, she has a disease.

An article written in October 2008 stated that there were 4.2 million pornographic sites on the internet. Twelve per cent of the total amount of websites available on the internet at this time.

25 per cent of all searches through the search engines were for pornographic websites.
40 million Americans in 2008 regularly visited pornographic websites.

In August of 2005, in the United States alone, 70.9 million people visited pornographic websites at least once. That is equal to 40.37 per cent of the total website audience.

You now, the women are lied to, they are groomed. It’s not like, Oh I want to do this. They are forced to perform! And that’s why they are high. They don’t enjoy it. It is a painful experience. Therefore it needs to be made sure that they are on drugs or drunk before they start making the movie. They are used and abused.

Pornography destroys a man’s and a woman’s character. It has been proven that the younger a man or a boy is when he is exposed to pornography for the first time the harder it will be for him to develop intimate and healthy relationships with women.

Pornography will destroy your moral fabric. Pornography will destroy the man God wants you to be. It’s not like, Oh I’m sinning a little bit, no one gets hurt, it’s just a little look. No, it will destroy the man God wants you to become.

So I ask all of us: When are we going to repent?

When will we put this behind us and stop playing with sin, becoming weak character men who cannot take a stand for God? This is the question we need to ask ourselves to turn our lives from Satan’s Fiction into God’s movie.
