A Nasty Yeast Infection

Be on your guard against the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees.

Jesus Christ

Yeast is a one-cell plant that is too small for the human eye to see. Yeast, being a fungus grows in “colonies”. Though it is tiny it has a massive impact in bread.

Jesus said the Pharisees (the teachers of the Law) and Sadducees have yeast. No, he wasn’t saying that their feet stink due to a foot fungus, nor the yeast infection found in the human body.  Jesus wasn’t talking about the yeast used in bread either, but was talking about something way worse then these! Jesus was talking about their “teaching“ being a yeast infection, a nasty “fungus” to the true Doctrine of Faith.  Even a little bit of a false teaching in our lives, can make a huge impact in our faith and our doctrine. As Jesus said the Pharisees, though they knew the law, were worshiping God in vain, due to the teachings and traditions of men (Mark 7). Today we have a “Yeast Infection” in our “Religious” world!

Yeast given to our society

“Pray Jesus Into Your Heart”,

“Accept Jesus Into Your Heart”, and

“You’re Saved By Faith Alone”

After the New Covenant was established in 33AD, many new “teachings” became church doctrine in the 2nd and 3rd centuries. Doctrines such as infant baptism, original sin, perpetual virginity of Mary, priests as clergy, papal infallibility and many more became doctrine after being introduced by men (not apostles). This was the beginning of the Catholic Church.

In 1517 Martin Luther came out with his “Ninety-Five Theses”, which questioned the Catholics practices.  Sliding the pendulum, this was the beginning of the doctrine “You’re Saved By Faith Alone” as Martin Luther saw the errors in Catholic doctrine of being saved by indulgences he wanted to make sure no “work” was involved in his salvation doctrine.

In 1801 there was a “revival” held in Cane Ridge Kentucky. This went on for weeks and was reported people were barking like dogs, rolling on the floor after long times with out food and being in the intense heat. Then in 1835 Charles Finney systemized the Cane Ridge experience with the “Anxious Seat” practice. It has been said it is a manipulation of people’s emotions to get them to have a premature confession for Christ. Finney states the purpose of the Anxious Seat is to be a replacement for Baptism, which the apostles taught. He writes: “The church has always felt it necessary to have something of this kind to answer this very purpose. In the days of the apostles, baptism answered this purpose. The gospel was preached to the people, and then all those who were willing to be on the side of Christ, were called out to be baptized. It held the place that the anxious seat does now as a public manifestation of their determination to be Christians”

In 1860’s Dwight Moody modified the practice from “Anxious Seat” to the “Inquiry Room”. Instead of calling whole congregations to make a public decision, Dwight decided it would be best to call individuals into back rooms with counselors to mediate private meetings, this would end with a prayer and was the beginning to the doctrine of “Pray Jesus Into Your Heart”.

However this teaching spread rapidly with the help of Billy Sunday, Billy Graham, and Bill Bright. After creating the “Four Spiritual Laws” they could now call people to the “Anxious Seat” wherever they were at, weather in a pew, on the street, driving their car, or sitting in their room. The “Four Spiritual Laws” were printed on leaflets and handed out, and even printed in some Bibles! They also came out with their own translation called the “Living Bible” to help support their claim of the “Sinners Prayer” for salvation.

Now so many “Christians” teach this is the means to salvation, not realizing that it’s only 200 years old and brought to you by “teachings of man”.

The Teaching of the Bible

The Bible was written between ~1450bce and ~90ace and was originally written in Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek. The Old Testament originally written in Hebrew, (while some parts written in Aramaic was translated into Greek before the “Common Era” called the “Septuagint”.  However the New Testament was originally written in Greek. The Bible was then first translated into Latin, later into English (known as the King James Translation). Over time as “English” changes so new translations have to be made in order to keep up with the current “Language”. Sometimes it’s best to go back to the original language to get the “true” meaning of a word or passage. This we will do with some scriptures that will give us a greater understanding about the three doctrines we are addressing (already we understand that man started these teachings and were not founded until hundred of years after the 1st century church started).

John 8:30-32

Even as he spoke, many believed in him. To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”

“Believed”: Greek word Jesus used is “Pisteuo”, It means in a moral or religious reference to be:

A. Used in the NT of the conviction and trust to which a man is impelled by a certain inner and higher prerogative and law of soul.

B.  To trust in Jesus or God as Able to aid either in obtaining or in doing something: saving faith

C. Mere acknowledgment of some fact or even: intellectual faith.

(Same word is used in Gal 2:16, 3:6; Ro 3:2,22; Ro 4:3,5,11,17,18,24)]

Jesus then states in verse 44

“You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father’s desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies.”

They “believed” (“pisteuo”) yet Jesus says they are sons of Satan. When studying this out you will find the issue is with people not “hold[ing] to my teaching” to “really [be] my disciples the issue was their obedience (“Holding”) to Jesus’s teaching.

James 2:9

You “pisteuo” that there is one God. Good! Even the demons believe that—and shudder.”

You see even Demons have “pisteuo” and are not saved! The issue is with their obedience to the word of God! You see the scripture actually condemns just having “pisteuo” alone (“faith alone”), it must be combined with obedience.

The statement “we are saved by pisteuo” is true but not by ““Pisteuo” alone”.

We see a different word in Ephesians 2:8-9

For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— not by works, so that no one can boast.”

Faith”: Greek is “Pistis”. It means:

Relating to God:

  1. the conviction that God exists and is the creator and ruler of all things, the provider and bestower of eternal salvation through Christ.

Relating to Christ:

  1. A strong and welcome conviction or belief that Jesus is the Messiah, through whom we obtain eternal salvation in the kingdom of God
  2. The religious beliefs of Christians
  3. Belief with the predominate idea of trust (or confidence) whether in God or in Christ, springing from faith in the same
  4. Fidelity, faithfulness
  5. The character of one who can be relied on

James 2:17

In the same way, faith (“Pistis”) by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead.”

James 2:24

“You see that a person is considered righteous by what they do and not by “Pistis” alone.”

After careful study of the scriptures we can come to the conviction that we are saved by faith, but we do not have any evidence to say that we can be “saved by faith alone”. In fact we have scripture supporting the opposite. It is blatantly clear, that a person is not saved by faith alone, but this teaching is a direct contradiction to scripture.

Mark 16:16 Whoever “Pisteou” and is baptized (“baptizō”) will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned (to judge worthy of punishment: “Katakrino” in Greek).

“Saved”: “Sozo” in the Greek, meaning:

  1. To save, keep safe and sound, to rescue from danger or destruction (from injury or peril)
  2. To save a suffering one (from perishing), i.e. one suffering from disease, to make well, heal, restore to health
  3. To save in the technical biblical sense (negatively)
  4. To deliver from the penalties of the Messianic judgment
  5. To save from the evils which obstruct the reception of the Messianic deliverance

The first message preached after Jesus ascended into heaven was by Apostle Peter. In his message he told the people what they must do.

Acts 2:38

“Peter replied, “Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.”

Apostle Paul recalls Annanias’s words in his conversion:

And now what are you waiting for? Get up, be baptized and wash your sins away, calling on his name.” Acts 22:16

(Acts 2:36-41, 8:26-39, 16:22-34, 19:1-5)

Each conversion of someone becoming a “Disciple of Jesus” or “Christian” was called to repent, and be baptized. This was the teaching Jesus brought and the 1st century church followed. If you struggle with this teaching (I once also struggled with it the first time I heard it), search the scriptures for the true doctrine, don’t go by your feelings, traditions or even your past experiences. Ask yourself the question “What is the purpose of being Baptized in Jesus’s name?” remember Jesus never calls us to be “religious” (to simply obey something with out reason).

Why is this “Yeast” so scary?

Galatians 1:8-9But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach a gospel other than the one we preached to you, let him be eternally condemned! As we have already said, so now I say again: If anybody is preaching to you a gospel other than what you accepted, let him be eternally condemned!”

Let us get back to the true doctrine of the Bible and be “Radical” for Christ! Let’s clear up this nasty “Yeast Infection”! If you have been infected, don’t worry! There is a cure! You must contact a true Sold Out Disciple of Jesus (you can tell by their doctrine and way of life) and ask them to study the “Elementary Teachings” or “1st Principles” with you (Hebrews 5:11-6:4)! Don’t wait, as the yeast will only get worse. Get it cleared up today!
